The time is the end of the Heian period. Shaga, a monstrous bird creature residing in Mount Kurama, finds herself entrusted with the task of protecting the young boy she whimsically saved, Ushiwakamaru. As they embark on a journey towards the land of Oshu, Hiraizumi, while fending off assassins sent by the Taira clan, Shaga discovers a new side of herself.
